📍 Lalibela, Ethiopia
A church carved downward from a single block of red volcanic rock, its cross-shaped roof level with the ground.
✨ The story
In the 12th and 13th centuries, King Lalibela ordered eleven churches cut directly into the rock to create a 'new Jerusalem'. Still places of active worship, they are one of the wonders of Christian architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
